How to Wash Football Pants & Remove Grass Stains

Grass stains, mud streaks, and sweat-soaked fabric are the badges of a hard-fought game, but they don’t belong on your pants or your jersey come next kickoff.

Knowing how to wash football pants the right way keeps your gear looking sharp, performing at its best, and lasting through a full season. That includes everything from your pants to your football jersey, because dirt and grass stains don’t just disappear on their own.

Proper care starts with quality football pants built to handle the grind. But even the toughest equipment, from pants to your jersey, needs the right cleaning routine to stay game-ready. This guide walks you through every step:

  • Acting fast on fresh stains
  • Prepping your pants for the wash
  • Choosing the best pre-treatment methods
  • Washing without damaging synthetic fibers
  • Drying safely
  • Tackling stubborn set-in stains that refuse to quit

No shortcuts here. Clean gear plays better.

Act Fast

The key to removing grass stains is simple: move fast. Grass contains proteins and pigments that chemically bond to fabric within hours. Wait too long, and it sets. The best tip? Act immediately after playing outdoors

Protein-based stains like grass set or harden with heat,1 which is exactly why cold water is critical from the start.

Before anything else:

  • Take your pants and jersey outdoors and shake them out to remove loose dirt
  • Rinse stained areas under cold water to flush out excess debris
  • Use a damp soft cloth to wipe down problem areas if you can’t wash right away
  • Do a quick rinse in the sink to slow down stain buildup and bacteria

Cold water only. Heat locks stains in. Don’t risk it.

Remove Pads First

Before washing, take your gear apart. Always remove the pads. Pads trap moisture, sweat, and bacteria, which leads to that strong gear stink. Plus, pulling out the protective inserts allows each component to get properly cleaned without trapping moisture or detergent.

Start here:

  • Remove all foam inserts from hip, knee, and thigh areas
  • Wipe pads down using a cleaner and a soft cloth, or clean football pads using our dedicated routine for best results
  • For built-in padding, wash on a delicate cycle and air dry
  • Turn your pants and jersey inside out to protect logos and stitching
  • Rinse in a sink to remove excess mud and debris

Pre-Treat the Grass Stains

This step matters more than anything else in your cleaning routine. The pre-treatment phase does the heavy lifting when it comes to breaking down and lifting grass pigments from synthetic fabric.

Several household products work well for this purpose, and they vary in strength and availability. After applying any of the methods below, work both sides of the stained area with a soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush to help the solution penetrate the fibers.

OxiClean Spray

Saturate the grass stain completely with the spray, then massage the product into the fabric with your fingers. Hit it with another coat and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before washing.

This method works effectively on synthetic gear and helps eliminate odor-causing bacteria. It’s one of the best all-around options for keeping your football jersey and pants clean after every use.

Enzyme Detergent

Apply a concentrated enzyme-based laundry detergent directly onto the stain without diluting it. Let the product work for 15 to 30 minutes so the active ingredients have time to do their job.

Enzymes target organic material like grass, soil, and blood. They essentially digest the organic matter that causes the discoloration.

Dish Soap + Hydrogen Peroxide

Combine equal amounts of liquid dish soap and hydrogen peroxide in a small container. Spread this mixture over the stain, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

This combination works surprisingly well and uses items most families already have at home. It's a solid backup plan when you don't have specialty cleaning products available.

White Vinegar Solution

Blend distilled white vinegar with water in a one-to-one ratio and apply generously to the affected area. Let the pants soak in this solution for anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

Vinegar performs best on lighter grass marks and offers a bonus benefit of neutralizing sweat odor trapped in the fabric. It's a gentle option that won't damage colors or material.

Baking Soda Paste

Create a thick paste using three parts baking soda mixed with one part water. Rub this mixture into the stain and leave it undisturbed for about half an hour.

Baking soda works best as a supporting treatment alongside one of the other methods listed above. It also excels at absorbing and eliminating lingering odor from sweaty sports gear. The same approach can help you get the smell out of football shoulder pads.

Wash the Pants

Now it’s time for the full wash.

Set your machine to a cold wash cycle and go gentle. This helps prevent damage, color fading, and unwanted shrinking.

For best results:

  • Use a sports detergent designed for athletic gear.
  • Add a targeted stain remover for tougher spots.
  • Skip fabric softener, it damages performance fabrics.
  • Wash pants and jersey separately from regular clothing to avoid lint buildup.
  • Do a quick wipe or rinse in the sink before loading to remove leftover dirt.

Make sure to leave the fabric softener in the cabinet because it coats synthetic fibers and destroys the performance benefits of moisture-wicking fabrics, which is found in quite a bit of football gear. That buildup leads to reduced breathability of athletic wear2 and makes future stain removal harder.

Avoid standard chlorine bleach, even for white football pants. It causes polyester to turn yellow over time and weakens the material. Oxygen-based bleach alternatives provide whitening power without the damaging side effects.

Drying

Before you even think about applying heat, inspect every stained area carefully. High temperatures from a dryer permanently lock any remaining discoloration into the fabric, making it nearly impossible to remove later.

If stains are still there, stop. Fix it now. Only move forward with drying once the pants look completely clean.

Follow this:

  • Re-treat any remaining stains with a stain remover
  • Air dry your pants and jersey whenever possible to prevent shrinkage. Hang your pants on a clothesline or lay them flat on a drying rack in a well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight.
  • If using a dryer, choose low heat and check often

Avoid ironing football pants because the heat will melt or warp the synthetic materials. Dry cleaning chemicals are equally destructive to athletic wear and should be avoided entirely.

For Set-In Stains

Sometimes stains sit too long and become deeply embedded in the fabric. That’s part of the game, especially when gear sits too long dirty after playing outdoors.

When that happens:

  • Soak gear in vinegar + water + baking soda for 30–60 minutes
  • Use a soft cloth or brush to wipe and scrub the stain
  • Rinse thoroughly and repeat if needed
  • For white gear, try a longer soak or oxygen-based treatment

White pants with persistent discoloration may need an extended vinegar soak lasting several hours, or an overnight treatment with oxygen-based bleach diluted in water.

And remember, know how often should you wash your gear — after heavy use is best. The best defense against this frustration is building a habit of treating and washing your pants immediately after every game and practice, then knowing how to store football gear properly between uses.
